Wordlessness

A tired tenderness is in our Russian nature —
Concealed melancholy and its speechless pain,
Grief’s hopelessness, voicelessness, boundlessness, vastness.
Cold heights and the distances’ endless domain.

Come out at the dawn to the slope of a hillock,
Above the cold river hangs the steaming chill.
The frozen pine forest is one block of blackness;
Your heart is not glad and your pained heart grWs in.

The reeds — motionless. And the sedge does not tremble
The wordlessness of a peace so absolute
Deep stillness. The fields run away in the distance-
In all there s a tiredness both muted and mute.

And enter at dusk, as in fresh waves of water,
The cool clumps of orchard trees close by the way —
The trees are so gloomily, so strangely speechless.
Your heart is so sad and it cannot be gay.

As if your own soul has been asking for something,
And needlessly painful were all the replies.
Your heart has forgiven, but your heart has frozen.
It cannot help crying; it cries and it cries.
