Through the dark meshes of branches and trunks
And the scattered lace of the green leaves
I can see how a gray nightingale sings
In slight cadences, how his song weaves.
All of his body in song, his small head
(Concealed flutist) as if sculpted, cast —
Narrowing, widening: his whistling throat,
Loving pipe with the tones rippling past.
Singer and Seer, he's so close to me.
I know Aprils of past centuries;
Near to this bird I feel I have a box,
Magic box, bank of rich melodies.
There is a wide ‘A’ and there’s the deep ‘U’,
And the hazy ‘M’ loving ‘L’ long.
They blend and I shout ‘Ah — Oo, where are you?’
We kiss, knowing each other in song.
