The Snake

The Snake asked Zeus to take away his hiss.
And let him have a songbird’s voice instead.
“I’m miserable,” he moaned. “I can’t go on like this.
Wherever I rear up my head.
They shy away from me like sin;
Your smaller creatures do, at least;
And as for any bigger beast.
I'm lucky if I get off with my skin.

“I just can’t bear such torment and travail.
If only I could warble like a nightingale,
I would amaze them all! And, far from being feared,
I’d be well-liked — perhaps even revered.
Besides, I’d be the life of every party!”

Great Zeus agreed: the Snake’s hiss disappeared
For good. By way of making a new start, he
Crawled up into a tree, tucked in his tail,
And then began to sing like any nightingale.

The birds flocked to that tree from every hill and dale.
But when they saw the singer’s face.
In one whoosh! they all left the place.
“Well, what’s the matter? Don't you like my voice?
The Snake asked, very peevishly.

“Oh, yes!" a Starling said. “It’s really choice:
Just like a nightingale’s, quite obviously.
But when you opened up your mouth so wide.
We saw a pair of fangs inside.
That gave us quite a fright. So we decided —
With no offense intended, may I say —
We’d be most pleased to hear you sing, provided
You do it from a good, long way away.”

‎Кто послабей;
Нет, жизни этакой я боле не снесу;
Исполнил Юпитер Змеи прошенье;
И стая, было, птиц отвсюду к ней подсела;
Поешь, конечно, ты, не хуже соловья;
