Ilya Selvinsky
The Reader Of Poetry

To the pinkish, yellowish, graying critics,
and also to the iridescent critics, colored
like shot silk.

Muse! Lament away, complain away,
My sad conclusion still is this:
Of the millions who read newspapers,
Nine-tenths don't read any verse.

Its polemics attract a different sort,
However, with the lull, even this kind's diminished
But there's
    this
        one
            intrepid race
That lives on the littoral of verse.

We're not just talking about the reader,
Not the first comer, not just anyone.
He does not knock on rhymes like a woodpecker,
Or wander among images, like a blind man.
He does not expect enlightenment always,
He is not moved by trivialities,
Quite different is his approach to the lines,
    This reader of poetry.

He sees the sounds,
                                 he hears the colors,
Feels the inspiration, the humor, the play,
And the literary small fry cannot
Palm their bubbles off on him as pearly caviar;
He can't be told when one's talking of hares,
That these are lions,
                                 Tolstoys even!
(And incidentally, the inspired prose writer,
In his eyes, is a book of poems.)

Someone else reads only as he journeys,
Lets the landscape slip by, looks for love,
Both Balmont and Doronin are to his taste,
But even more than them, kebab or beef Stroganoff.

Our man, however, possessed by the same dreams,
Burns like a Hying fireball.
Our man, like kin, shares the same air we breathe.
And knows what's hurting whom.

Another reader reads and moves on,
Give him something else, and as for the first, forget it!
While our man treats a book like his girlfriend...
The reader of poetry is an artist.

He is still unformed, this reader,
He is still gathering head, like a battle.
He was not taught in the State Publishing House among ciphers,
But he is
    master of
        our fate!

How often do callous criticococci
Smother verse, like a plague of kittens,
And under a thick pall of demagoguery,
Try to cram the earth into a globe;

How often, washed up high and dry,
Have you snarled: "I'm sick of it! Go to hell!"
And have felt like biting the acid bullet,
As though it were a piece of fruity caramel...

When suddenly you get a scrap of paper
From somewhere on the other side of the Bay of Posyet:
It's the great reader of poetry
Who has felt the suffering of his poet.

And again, laughter wells up inside you,
It's as if you had gained half the world!
And again you walk amid the howling of dogs,
With your own. Habitual. Tiger's step.

Ему не всучат за жемчужью икру;

В глобус землю втиснуть хотят;
