Boris Pasternak
In Memory of Marina Tsvetaeva

Days spread out with distinct somberness.
The disconsolate brook flows along
In front of my entry hall porch door
Outside my window’s unblocked view.

Outside the fence along the road
The public garden flows from its bank.
Sprawling down, like beasts from a lair,
Tumultuous clouds lie low.

The book of nasty weather reveals
To me the loveliness of the land.
For you I describe woodland cones
At the top of the page where I write.

Oh Marina it’s been a long time,
And to bring back in remembrance
Your ashes from far-off Elaguba
Alas is no hardship at all.

In past years I intended to bear
Your triumph forward across the wide
Expanse of the dry snow, where wintering,
It was a longboat frozen in the ice.

* * *

I am baffled in the season of sowing,
Like a miserly millionaire who knows
His sister wastes of starvation,
To imagine you actually dead.

Can you explain how I might please you?
Something, somehow, let me know.
For, in the silence of your departure
There was, unspoken, a reproach.

Loss is forever enigmatic.
For clues of some explanation
I search anguished and without results:
Death has neither definition nor outline.

Here all is — shifting and shadow,
Detritus and self-deception,
With the merest of faith in resurrection
And some signs of a debt owed.

Winter — like a lavish funeral banquet:
Is to go outside the house, to add
Dried currants to the darkening night,
To spill wine — so much for getting drunk.

In front of the house the apple tree’s in a drift.
And the village is imprisoned in snow —
Your overpowering gravestone,
To me seems like the breadth of a year.

And now your face is turned to God,
You stretch out from earth to him,
As in the days, when the whole of you
Already was leading toward him.

* * *
