For Nadezhda Aleksandrovna Zalshupina
Why must life put up with such eccentrics
As every day for a small token
It passes for revue over the abyss
Hurrying from Potsdam as the sun goes down?
He passes out roses and mignonettes
From a basket, at the cornerstone that he rents,
Where he argues with semaphores about what beauty is
Smelling of benzene — with snow in the distance.
His hand points to roofs, pipes, an untouchable person
But not the twilight, — using a pencil for make-up.
As you merge there with the darkness, the subway train’s
Grimace blows away on the wings of smoke.
