A Fairy Tale

In the time of legends,
Time for magic meant,
Knight on noble errands
Through a grassland went.

Horseman looked for battle.
Out of grassland dust,
Murky woods came at him,
As in myths they must.

And his heart grew tauter,
And it gnawed inside:
Don’t approach the water,
Pull the saddle tight.

Horseman did not listen,
Climbed a knoll full speed,
Focused on the mission,
Urging on his steed,

And, in no way weary,
Made a dried-up creek,
Passed a grassy clearing,
Climbed a mountain peak,

Wandered in a hollow,
All a wooded maze,
Went where beasts would follow
To a drinking place.

He defied his senses
And what folks would think,
Lowered his defenses,
Led the horse to drink.

Where the path grew rougher
And the waters split,
By the flames of sulfur
Was a cavern lit.

Crimson smoke appalling
Filled his eyes with soot.
Someone’s voice came calling,
Boding nothing good.

All his senses sharper,
Horseman did not stall
And proceeded farther
To the luring call.

Keen to take things head-on
With his spear and flail,
Horseman saw a dragon,
Scaly head to tail.

Jaws with fire laden
Gave a hellish shine.
Thrice it wrapped a maiden
With its scaly spine.

And the fiend grew bolder:
Like a whip grotesque,
Wagging by her shoulder
Its unseemly neck.

In that land a beauty,
Out of many gleaned,
Was to be a booty
For the forest fiend.

Local folks, its servants,
Not to have to flee,
Paid that way the serpent’s
House retention fee.

Wrapped beneath her armpit
And around her throat,
Snake enjoyed the torment
As its trophy choked.

Praying that a comeback
By the skies be willed,
Horseman went to combat
With his spear atilt.

Eyelids shut. Two figures.
Heights with clouds thereon.
Waters. Shallows. Rivers.
Years and ages gone.

Helmet lost, unsaddled,
Horseman’s down indeed,
But the snake is trampled
By the faithful steed.

Near the dragon’s carcass,
Steed is laid marooned;
Horseman is unconscious;
Fairest maid has swooned.

Bright is midday heaven,
Blue the day’s caress.
Who is she? A sovereign?
Earth’s own child, princess?

Now in bliss delirious
Both can only weep,
Now their souls oblivious
Feel the force of sleep.

Now their health does rally,
Now their veins have shut
From exhaustion, sadly,
And a loss of blood.

Yet their hearts are beating.
He and she both seek
To awaken speaking
But succumb to sleep.

Years and ages gone.

Встарь, во время оно,
В сказочном краю
Пробирался конный
Степью по репью.

Он спешил на сечу,
А в степной пыли
Тёмный лес навстречу
Вырастал вдали.

Ныло ретиво́е,
На́ сердце скребло:
Бойся водопоя,
Подтяни седло.

Не послушал конный
И во весь опор
Залетел с разгону
На лесной бугор.

Повернул с кургана,
Въехал в суходол,
Миновал поляну,
Гору перешёл.

И забрёл в ложбину,
И лесной тропой
Вышел на звериный
След и водопой.

И глухой к призыву
И не вняв чутью,
Свёл коня с обрыва
Попоить к ручью.

У ручья пещера.
Пред пещерой брод.
Как бы пламя серы
Озаряло вход.

И в дыму багровом,
Застилавшем взор,
Отдалённым зовом
Огласился бор.

И тогда оврагом,
Вздрогнув, напрямик
Тронул конный шагом
На призывный крик.

И увидел конный,
И приник к копью,
Голову дракона,
Хвост и чешую.

Пламенем из зева
Рассевал он свет,
В три кольца вкруг девы
Обмотав хребет.

Туловище змея,
Как концом бича,
Поводило шеей
У её плеча.

Той страны обычай
Пленницу-красу
Отдавал в добычу
Чудищу в лесу.

Края населенье
Хижины свои
Выкупало пеней
Этой от змеи.

Змей обвил ей руку
И оплёл гортань,
Получив на муку
В жертву эту дань.

Посмотрел с мольбою
Bсадник в высь небес
И копьё для боя
Взял наперевес.

Сомкнутые веки.
Bыси. Облака.
Воды. Броды. Реки.
Годы и века.

Конный в шлеме сбитом,
Сшибленный в бою.
Верный конь, копытом
Топчущий змею.

Конь и труп дракона
Рядом на песке.
В обмороке конный,
Дева в столбняке.

Светел свод полдневный,
Синева нежна.
Кто она? Царевна?
Дочь земли? Княжна?

То, в избытке счастья,
Слёзы в три ручья.
То душа во власти
Сна и забытья.

То возврат здоровья,
То недвижность жил
От потери крови
И упадка сил.

Но сердца их бьются.
То она, то он
Силятся очнуться
И впадают в сон.

Сомкнутые веки.
Выси. Облака.
Воды. Броды. Реки.
Годы и века.
