Sleep on a Summer’s Night
(Five Verses)
5
Drink and write, with a kerosene lamp,
Watching for patrols’ revving motors
In the street, with beer mug in hand
As you sip the July night away.
The green-eyed thirsty giant!
Pickles spill over the poplar-wood table,
Petty hoodlums, briars. — Be quiet, don’t shout! —
Whisper in your beer, whisper.
Rembrandt’s stein with the three craggy peaks!
Pre-storm bolts of lightning don’t break the stuffiness.
At night the storm comes. Look backwards!
Remember beer is but diversion from horn blasts!
The times have crazed me, how could I bring sense
To the bottomless past’s darkening haste?
At the bottom of the Mazur lakes, shoeless,
Samsonov’s bugler sleeps.
Later in Moscow a motorcycle gobbled,
Sounding up to the stars, like the second coming.
This was a plague. This was a moratorium,
Not an assembled meeting and the verdicts are dreadful.
