Bella Akhmadulina
Incantation

Don’t weep for me — I’ll live on
as a happy beggar, a convict with goodwill,
as a southerner frozen in the north,
as a consumptive and ill-tempered Petershurger
in the malarial south I’ll live on.

Don’t weep for me — I’ll live on
as that lame girl who came out on the church porch,
as that drunkard slumped on the tablecloth,
as that one who paints the Mother of God,
as a wretched icon dauber I’ll live on.

Don’t weep for me — I’ll live on
as that young girl taught to read and write,
who in the blurred future light
(her bangs red as mine) like a fool
will know my poems. I’ll live on.

Don’t weep for me — I’ll live on
more merciful than a sister of mercy
in the preslaughter recklessness of war,
and tinder the Most Blessed Marina’s star
somehow, nonetheless, I’ll live on.
