Anna Akhmatova
In a Pioneers’ Camp

Hail, O race of young, unknown friends!
Pushkin

Straying one morning in summertime,
I wandered slow in lanes of fir and pine
And watched a band of children in a dance
Beneath the airy mesh of greening trees.
Their happy faces glowing rose and tan.
Their cries, their joyful movements in the dance
Among the trees for one brief moment made
A sudden spell of wonder in the glade.
The grass seemed diamonded, with points of flame
Alight, and silently enchanted breezes
Mingled the scents of ancient pine trees, moss.
Entangled brush, and forest strawberries.
Long beneath a sky of shining blue
Their voices through the vastness of the park
Rang out. until the echoes, too. seemed young.
They raised their banners to the open sky.
And Mother Russia
                               lovingly leaned down
To watch her happy children with a smile.
